The 5 Key Elements That Have Kept Me Going…

Many people have asked me, ‘How do you do it Nadeera? What is it that has enabled you to come this far?’ Well, I would be lying if I say the journey was a bed of roses. In fact, it was a bed full of thorns. But I remove those thorns that stick onto me bit by bit, as I move along that infinite bed aka LIFE.

I know some of you may still want to know what is it exactly that has kept me going. Upon reflection, I came up with 5 key points that have helped me through my journey on this earthly plane. Here it goes:

1. God & The Bahá’í Faith

Ya Baha’u’l-Abhá (O Glory of the All Glorious)

First and foremost, it was my Faith and Trust in God. I trusted Him and knew that He had a plan for me and all I have to do is ‘hang in there’. Hanging in there was very tough indeed. And trust me, I am not a very patient person either. But I knew, I had to! Prayers and reading the Words of God was indeed very comforting as well. I began to grow as an individual through these Words of God and grew to love God and my Faith. I also reminded myself every now and then that there is no greater love than the love of God and there is nothing or no one else I should fear but God alone.

2. Parents

The LAU Birds 🤪♥️

My parents were my pillars of Hope and Strength. Let me give you an example, every one of us take a shower every day don’t we? I don’t know about you but from what I am guessing most of us take our shower at least once a day. Some of us use pails of water to bathe. So imagine this pail filled with water being poured onto yourself while you are taking your shower. Well, now imagine that water being replaced with love, support and care. So it was basically like that for me. My parents were constantly showering me pails and pails full of love, support and care. Besides water, love, support and care were added in my pail of water as well. Haha! It was in fact the key ingredient. Without their support, love and care, I would not have been as clean and purified as I am today. God only knows where I would be today if it weren’t for them. Maybe not even existent in this world anymore. Who knows? Look, I am not saying I am very clean, pure and perfect now. No! I know I am not even half way there. Still a long long….way to go. But what I am saying is that to purify one’s self, you need these things. You need support. You need encouragement. You need love. You need guidance. And I was absolutely blessed to receive all those from my beloved parents. So ‘Thank you Mum & Dad!’.

3. Sense of Humour

Another thing that played a huge role in my life is sense of humour. I would say I have been gifted with a fairly good sense of humour and I believe I got this from my father. All those who knew him would agree with me that he is always joking around and making everyone laugh. He makes me laugh all the time. He would say just about anything and it would seem like the funniest thing on earth to me. I love to laugh and make people laugh. Making another soul laugh and bringing out the joy and radiance in others in turn brings joy to one’s own self as well. Making others happy will make you forget your own unhappiness. That’s how I felt. I felt all my worries and troubles and problems just flew away almost immediately when I laughed. A quote from the Baha’I Writings says that ‘Laughter is spiritual relaxation’ and I find this so very true. It could instantly make you feel so much at ease and heal just about any ailment one is going through I believe. I am so thankful that sense of humour has always been a huge part of my life and I will most definitely not allow anyone or anything to take that away from me.

4. Learn from the Negative

In life, I learnt a lot not only from all the positive experiences but I’ve learnt much much more from the negative experiences and the failures too. These failures are the things that have polished me to become the person I am today. Our failures are the things that make us mature and grow into the perfect human beings we are meant to be. Failures are a path of life’s journey. Failures can be said to be the best education. You have to fail first before you succeed. Therefore, I held on to the belief and trust that all the NO’s will eventually become a YES someday. Sometimes, in life you do not always get what you want. Well, perhaps that is true. But I believe God doesn’t just give you everything you want. He gives you everything you NEED. What you want may not be what you need. And thus, you may feel like He isn’t listening to you or He isn’t answering your prayers. Truth is, He listens. He always does. You just have to believe so and let Him continue to work his magic.

Furthermore, I also try not to think or focus on the physical aches and pains I undergo every day and to go on doing what is more important for that particular period of time. This is psychologically attuning one’s self to what’s more worthwhile. Because I know that these are all just impermanent tests and difficulties I am left to face with in this temporary world and that there is a much more eternal and everlasting life out there for me. My Faith has taught me that the body is just a mere figure given to us and what matters the most is how we mould ourselves and our inner character in this world to assist in the eternal progress of our soul in the next worlds to come. My Faith has also taught me not to fear anything. Not even death. Because I know my soul will live forever anyway, so what is there to fear death for? People often relate death as a bad thing but in reality, death is truly a ‘messenger of joy’ lifting us from this world and leading us towards attaining the presence of God. I hold on fast to this belief and thus do not allow fear to overtake me in any circumstances whatsoever.

5. Focus on the Positive

I’ve also learnt to focus more on the positives and ignore just about any negative forces that come towards me. It is very easy to get pulled into negativity. It is very easy to let FEAR overtake you. It is very easy to let people dictate your life. But I did not allow that to happen. I pushed it away as much as I could. It could be very overwhelming sometimes. Yes! But I knew that all these negative thoughts are going to get me NOWHERE. I knew I had a choice. A choice to either let these negative voices determine my life and just give up or a choice to shut my ear to all those and keep moving forward. So which choice am I going to make? Of course, the choice to keep moving forward would be the most rational one and therefore, that was the choice I made and choose to make every day. Because I know I am still here for a purpose and hence I am here to fulfill that purpose.

Now, what is this purpose I am talking about? This purpose I am talking about is not just about me and what I achieve in this life. How many As I’ve got. Whether I am a Director of a company. How much money I have made and so on so forth. Nope! It’s not just that. Because at the end of the day, it is not about what Nadeera did. But it is about who she was. Because who you are is what makes all the difference. The values you carry with you is what people look at. Never mind what I have achieved. At the end of the day nobody cares about that. But who was I in reality is the big question. How did I make a difference in this world? How did I contribute to the betterment of society? Those are the questions that need to be answered and the answers to those questions are what really matters. These are the things that will truly determine how far you get in life.

So there there you have it. The 5 key elements that has kept your Beautifully Imperfect Nut well and alive so far.. 😜

Till next time,

Your Imperfect Nut

  1. I woke up at 5.30am in Bengaluru today. It’s 8.00am in KL. I would be at work in KL. I read your article today though you sent me the link quite a while ago. I’m fresh with energy after a good night’s sleep waiting for my classes which will begin at 9.30am.
Its a perfect setting to express my thoughts.
Whenever you name pops up in the WhatsApp or wherever I see you; in the secret recesses of my mind , a switch automatically goes on in Reflection Mode. What could be Nadeera’s purpose in this life? What can I learn from Nadeera? What can I learn from from the unfailing support of her parents to Nadeera? These deep questions seen to be popping up every now and then.
I derive my inspiration primarily from the Baha’i Writings and the other source is from what is known as ‘ The Law of Attraction’ or inspirational information coming from these positive psychology. A golden thread runs through these words of wisdom from the Divine Teachers and these other mortal thinkers if it could be possibly summed up in one word – Gratitude. Anyone can be grateful in a state of comfort where everything is going well. It takes great magnanimity to be thankful in times of tests and trials. This is the one quality , ‘Gratitude’ which I’m constantly being reminded. What are people screaming about or complaining that things are not going well in their lives? Nadeera, I think your purpose is to inspire everyone by your gratefulness. Your mum is an expression of patience and servitude. You dad is a reminder that joy, laughter and a sense of humour is possible in any situation. May your lives be fulfilled with an abundance of all things. May God bless your family.
